New Techniques for Breast Revision and Reconstruction Improve Outcomes

The latest technique, called Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) not only enhances the safety profile of breast reconstruction and revision methods, but also addresses the issue of creating a pocket within the breast where the implant can be put in place. In breast reconstruction, ADM is used as an adjunct to the traditional tissue expander. In contrast to tissue expanders, the ADM is able to integrate into the patient’s own tissues and become a living piece of tissue inside the patient. As such, the ADM is more resistant to infection and it also has a more natural feeling to the touch. Results from breast reconstruction and revision surgeries are enhanced using ADM because more implants are positioned properly and as a result of new technique, fewer patients experience capsular contracture.
